How is password strength measured?
Password strength is measured by how well it resists cracking through combination guessing (brute force). That's why the strongest passwords are long, random and unique. The shorter the password, the easier it is to crack. Trying every combination of 6 characters takes just two minutes. An 8-character password can be cracked in three hours, and a 12-character one in three years. Attacks usually run with specialised software rather than by hand, which shortens the cracking time.

Which passwords are easy to crack?
The easiest passwords to crack are non-random, non-unique and short.
A birth date, wedding date or other important event. An attacker who knows the owner can easily guess the right combination.
A child's name, a pet's nickname, a street name. Attackers can guess the password even without knowing the owner, a dictionary attack is enough.
Combinations like “qwerty”, “password”, “12345678”, “passw0rd” and so on. A brute-force attack checks the most common passwords first.
How does a strong password differ from a weak one?
A strong password meets three requirements: it is random, long and unique. Random means it's generated from random characters. Long means it has at least 6 characters, the more, the better. Unique means it isn't reused. Using unique passwords helps protect an account in case of a leak.
